Our Place Diner selected a bulletin just north of their restaurant to encourage people to stop by and to promote their burger that was voted “Bama’s Best Burger 2018” by the Alabama Cattleman’s Association. They have had such great response from the billboard that they are looking to add an additional billboard just south of the restaurant in the near future.

As a brand, how does one most effectively navigate these over saturated waters to connect with potential consumers? You flip the script and get outside. Out Of Home (OOH) advertising is currently one of the fastest growing mediums on the market and ironically enough, even the largest tech companies like Apple and Google are taking note.
According to a recent Nielsen study, billboards boast some pretty admirable stats:
Thanks in part to the onslaught of digital noise, OOH has once again proven itself as the best bang-for-your-buck marketing tool. At a fraction of the cost of traditional media, the OOH return on investment is quite impressive. According to a Hustle article- “Radio, print, and television ads have declined in prominence, but OOH ads have enjoyed 31 consecutive quarters of growth, and a 35% increase in ad spend since 2010. By 2021, billboards are expected to grow to a $33B industry.”
They say what is old is new again and the “old-school” billboard is most certainly still a powerhouse on the advertising front. Since 1968 Durden Outdoor has been making clients FAMOUS and we are happy to see current trends reflect what OOH advertisers like us have known all along. From the 1920s to 1960s neon signs were all the rage. Cities glowed at night with these bright and often colorful displays. And on long highways, a neon sign was a welcoming beacon of a night’s sleep at an open hotel.
Nowadays, signage has spread out to many varieties and the heyday of neon lights is gone. But all great things have their moment to shine again. Dothan Volkswagen loved the idea of bringing back this retro look to their outdoor advertising. Although this style may hearken back to the early days of billboards, we reinvented the look for a more modern look befitting the Volkswagen brand.
Our team built the neon lighting for the Volkswagen logo from rope light LEDs, doubled to get the full neon light effect. The logo was built all as one unit, so it could be built in-house and added once the board went up. One of the great aspects of adding lighting like this to a board is that in the day, it doesn’t distract from seeing the logo, and at night it stands out from quite a distance.

Recently, one of Durden Outdoor Displays, Inc.’s long time clients, River City Grill in Eufaula, Alabama, approached us about advertising a new pizza restaurant they were opening. Our creative department got to work and came up with a campaign that would feature River City Grill and what would become the new hotspot of Eufaula, Graffiti’s Pizza Joint. Both of these restaurants are located in beautiful Downtown Eufaula. After working through a couple of designs and tweaks, the creative was installed on three major artery bulletins, targeting northbound and southbound traffic into Eufaula on Hwy 431. The billboards not only served as top of the mind awareness but also as a directional for non-local traffic headed to Columbus and Atlanta or to the beaches. Stephanie Ryan, partner and marketing director of Graffiti’s, said they have seen a significant increase in traffic and sales since their billboards went up. “We receive compliments everyday,” stated Ryan.
If you are in the Eufaula area and have a craving for a fresh New York-style pizza, steak and shrimp or just a great sandwich, check out our friends at River City Grill & Graffiti’s Pizza Joint, where you are sure to leave full and happy.
