Wiregrass Football Star Alex Wright in the 2022 NFL Draft
May 16, 2022
Former Elba, Alabama and UAB outstanding football player, Alex Wright, was selected to play for the Cleveland Browns. As a defensive end, he was the second pick in the third round of the NFL Draft, being picked as 78th overall. At 6’5″ 271 lbs, Wright is a force to be reckoned with that will pay off in the short and long term for the Browns.
Wright was a three-star recruit at Elba High School. As a true freshman at the University of Alabama Birmingham in 2019, he was a conference USA All-Freshman team pick after starting three of fourteen contests (28 tackles, 8.5 for loss with 4.5 sacks). He then went on to start seven of eight games played in 2020 and then flourished in 2021, grabbing second-team all-conference honors with a team-high of 7.5 tackles for loss and 7 sacks among his 46 total tackles.
Wright’s performance is not only outstanding on the field but off the field as well. Through PicScience, a program designed to inspire and motivate students to move forward through the power of math and science, Alex developed a tour called “Impact for Change.” This tour includes several stops where Alex talks with children about the importance of education, staying in school and overcoming adversity. In addition to speaking with students, Alex hands out workbooks detailing fractions for beginners. The collaboration that Alex has with PicScience is truly a game changer as he sets the stage as a role model for young children.
